CHURCH OF SAN FRANCESCO AT BOLSENA:
The elegant and unostentatious church
of San Francesco overlooks Piazza Matteotti at Bolsena City.
It was built in honor of the Birth- of
Maiy at the beginning of the 13th century in Romanesque
forms.
Later, after die approval of die Franciscan
Order, the church was rededicated to Saint Francis and the
original Romanesque forms were replaced by an elegant Gothic,
still to be seen in the fine portal.
The strikingly simple interior consists
of a single nave ending in a square apse and with a trussed
roof.
Completely restructured and deconsecrated,
it has been transformed into a large theater structure
and is now used for cultural activities.
